If you are using DocScanFx as a standalone application, you are ready to start exploring the initial "Modes" it came configured with and adjusting them to meet your needs.  For a video overview of the basics of what DocScanFx can do you can watch this video.  For other examples of what you can do with modes, check out these articles, or use this support page to contact us to ask any questions about how to get DocScanFx to meet your needs.

PACS Integration

DocScanFx can integrate with your PACS, too. If you've installed v3.1.0.4+, you are integrating with Philips iSite PACS, and you chose the iSite integration installer option then go to this support article and scroll half way down to the page and follow the remaining steps in the "Configure IntelliSpace PACS Enterprise" section.  Your INI configuration file has been preconfigured with example settings for integrating an option to scan documents and use electronic forms.  Please contact support if you have any questions about the integration configuration for Philips iSite.

Other PACS integration instructions are available here along with general integration options if your PACS or RIS is not listed but you'd like to have it integrated.

Reinstalling DocScanFx v3.1.0.4+

Reinstalling or upgrading to a new version of DocScanFx is easy.  Just follow these steps:

  1. Browse to your DocScanFx installation folder, usually C:\Program Files (x86)\DocScanFx, and copy your DocScan.INI file to a folder that contains the DocScanFx Setup program for the version you want to install.  It should look something like this:
  2. Uninstall your current version of DocScanFx.
  3. Run the new setup installer and it will recognize the DocScan.INI file in the same folder as the Setup application and use that INI file instead of the generic one it comes with.
  4. You can add several other files to the install folder to automatically ensure the scanner and any electronic forms are setup again in the new version:
    • To copy your scanner settings, put a copy of the \DocScanFx\Resources\NAPS2\Data\profiles.xml file in your install folder.
    • To copy all your electronic forms during a reinstall/upgrade, copy your \DocScanFx\Resources\Forms folder to your install folder.
    • To copy your Philips iSite integration files, place a copy of your \DocScanFx\Resources\Integrations folder in your install folder.

Deploying to Multiple Computers in v3.1.0.4+

Installing DocScanFx on multiple computers is easily accomplished using any combination of features described below which works best for your environment.

  • Do a full install and configuration of DocScanFx on one computer.  Get the INI file tuned to perform exactly as you need it.  Place a copy of the DocScanFx installer in an easy to access location on your network (or portable device) along with your custom INI file as described in the previous section.
  • Use the support site to request a "Deployment Key" to use in your distributed DocScan.INI file.  A deployment key is time limited but not hardware specific.  This will enable you to mass deploy DocScanFx wherever you need it.   Starting DocScanFx with any of these command lines will cause it to output the workstations System ID to the console: -SystemID, -SysID, SystemID, or SysID.  This is useful for scripted gathering of workstation System IDs for placing requests for the real permanent keys prior to the deployment key expiring.
  • If you have standardized on a particular model of scanner across your workstations, add the profiles.xml file from a completed installation to your install location so the scanner will not need to be setup on each workstation.
  • If you have several different types of scanners or INI configurations across your environment, make separate install folders with INI files and scanner profiles.xml files so you can install from the appropriate folder and know the settings will be correct for that device.
  • You can use command line arguments with the installer to run it in automated mode.  See these examples:
    • /SILENT /TYPE=typical    - Hands free, typical install.
    • /SILENT /TYPE=iSite        - Hands free, "Philips iSite Integration" install.
    • /SILENT /COMPONENTS="program,desktopshortcut,isite,forms,desktopshortcut,startmenushortcut"    - Hands free custom install with a comma separated list of components to install.  All available components are shown in this example.  "program" is required, and any combination of other components to meet your needs.
  • Finally, you can build your own installer by simply copying the install folder to another computer and building your own shortcuts as needed.  The program is entirely self contained, however certain file permissions in the DocScanFx folder must be set for it to operate correctly.  You can run the DocScanFx\Resources\SetFilePermissions.exe file with admin rights to reset the permissions.

Installation instructions for DocScanFx versions up to 3.1.0.3

Note: These instructions are ONLY for DocScanFx version 3.1.0.3 or lower.

Important: Ensure your newly installed DocScanFx has the correct file permissions set or you won't be able to save the changes you make in the steps listed below.  Read this first for more information.

A video tutorial is also available to show you how to configure DocScanFx:  Click here to view the video.

  1. After you have downloaded your DocScanFX installer, run the file, read the license agreement and click the "Accept" button.
  2. Change the installer path if needed, otherwise leave the recommended path (pay attention to where it installed) and click the "Next" buttons until the installer is finished.
  3. You will need to configure your own PACS information before DocScan will operate correctly.
  4. Close DocScanFx if you chose to run it after the installer completed.
  5. Browse to the folder where DocScanFx was installed (usually 'C:\Program Files (x86)\DocScanFx')  and find the DocScan.INI file.
  6. Open the DocScan.INI file in notepad or NotePad++ (preferred).
  7. Enter your license key after the text "Key=" as described here.
  8. In the DICOM section you can specify as many different PACS archives or PACS Modality Worklists as you need.  The initial format of the DICOM section looks like this:

    blob1478042330172.png

  9. The "friendly name" is on the left side of the equal sign and can be used in the various "Mode" sections to identify what sources and store destinations to use.
  10. After the equal sign comes the either the word "Archive" or "Worklist", Use the word "Archive" to tell DocScanFx that the DICOM node is a DICOM StoreSCP (Archive), or "Worklist" if it is a Modality Worklist Server (Worklist).
  11. Next comes a separator pipe symbol '|' and the AE Title.
  12. Then an @ symbol and the IP address.
  13. Finally comes a colon symbol and the port.
  14. Adjust these settings to reflect your environment's PACS servers.
  15. There are several examples of "Modes" in the sample INI file.  "Modes" sections refers to groups of settings for a specific workflow your end users will choose to use.  The name of the Mode is contained in brackets and the settings follow.  An example mode named "CT - Today (Auto Search)" is shown below.  More example are in the DocScan.INI file in your installation.  For more examples of modes, their uses, and detailed explanations, view this article.

  16. Each of the settings shown above and many more are documented in the "DocScan INI Settings.pdf" file located in the DocScanFx\Resources folder.  You can also reference an online version of the settings file here.

  17. A few notes about the example settings for the mode shown above:

  • ModeDescription - is used to provide a textual description in the DocScanFx application for your end users to see the purpose of that mode.
  • DicomSearchModality - is used to limit archive or modality worklist queries to a single modality type.  Leave blank to query all modalities.  However, one of the main benefits of using modes is to enable specific workflows for your various service areas so consider creating separate modes for each modalities' workflows to meet the needs of each group of users or technologists.
  • DicomSearchDateRange- In this example, the search date range is limited to "Today". DocScanFx is meant to be used to add informational documents to current exams therefore the search date ranges always center around the current date plus or minus a specified number of additional days. Examples:
    • Today+1     - This would return results for today and tomorrow (most likely used when querying a Modality Worklist)
    • 1-Today     - Returns results for queries done yesterday or today.
    • 2-Today+1   -  Returns results from two days prior to today, today, and tomorrow.
  • QuerySource and QueryArchive - You'll notice these are both set to "Archive1" in the example above.  However, they don't necessarily need to.  For one mode you could query a modality worklist and store to an archive, and for another mode you could query an archive and store to the same archive.  In a more creative example, you could query your main PACS archive and store to a remote after hours reading service.  This might be used in scenarios where your after hours readers don't have access to your EMR for history or prior reports.  Your techs could use DocScanFx to easily grab screen captures of relevant information out of the EMR or RIS, but there's no need to store these images to your local PACS.  Instead, the mode could direct the store to the remote reader archive and the images would match up to the main study images sent from your PACS archive or modality.
  • DicomQueryLocalAeTitle - this setting allows you on a per mode basis to specify the local AE title to be used when querying an archive or worklist. There is also a separate setting that can be used to specify the AE title used when storing images.  Consult the "DocScan INI Settings.pdf" file located in the Resources folder inside DocScanFx's installation folder, or the online version here.
